Searching Topic: Transit Gate...

Synopsis:
The Transit Gate is the super-structure that allows space-faring vessels to travel at faster-than-light speeds. Manufactured by the Aglidica Innovations Corporation, the Transit Gate is the creation responsible for intragalactic civilization and commerce. Although they come in different variants, the general function of a Gate is the same throughout: using Mass Manipulation to launch ships and objects to a destination faster than the speed of light.

History:
With the speed of light being a harsh limit on humanity's space exploration capabilities, colonization beyond the Solar System was difficult and often unprofitable. Terraforming technology was effective at converting any rocky planet/moon into a habitable world, but getting the massive machinery across lightyears of space required tremendous amounts of planning and fuel. In order to reap the fruits of the Milky Way, a seemingly impossible solution was needed. The Aglidica Innovations Corporation and Kadleo Spacetime Industries, two well established technological industries, were locked in a race to usher humanity into a new age of exploration. Although this cold war was not officially publicized, persistent rumors created an air of anticipation throughout civilization for years. 4 months after reports of a raid on one of Kadleo's research facilities, AIC announced that they had finally discovered a way to defy the laws of physics. The first Transit Gate was completed 2 years after the announcement, and underwent tests for 6 months in a secluded location. The original Gate was not designed with a return gate; it was intended to send a fleet of volunteers into the heart of the galaxy to harvest resources and perform more intensive research on the stars. When the gate was ready for its first official ignition, it was moved from its testing location to Earth's orbit, and was christened as a monument to the tenacity of mankind. After a lengthy ceremony, all of civilization watched as the First Fleet aligned behind the Gate, ready to leap into the unknown. In a series of bright blue streaks, the fleet disappeared into the stars, and were not heard from again for three decades. With communications still not able to exceed the speed of light, there was no way of contacting the First Fleet to learn if they had survived their journey. However, one day, the original Gate flared once again, despite having been inactive for years. A brand new fleet of ships appeared over Earth in a series of thundering booms. They were revealed to be the progeny of the original fleet; not only had they survived their journey, they had thrived in the resource-rich section of the galaxy they found themselves in. They were able to build 5 new Transit Gates, one of which connected to the original one remotely. Although the construction of the first Gate was a success by itself, the viability of using them for rapid interstellar travel secured AIC's position as the leading force in human advancement. Over time, the Transit Web would be established, consisting of Gate routes spanning across the galaxy.

Structure:
The physical structure of a Transit Gates differs by variant, but most of them contain the same essential components:
-The Induction Ring, this structure contains the veil that primes a ship for FTL travel.
-The Stabilizing Ring(s), this structure anchors the Transit Gate in space, and ensures that there is absolutely no directional drift.
-Solar Panel Array, the energy gathered from these panels is only used to ignite the Gate, which powers itself once activated.
-Main Hull, the majority of the Gate's structure, which houses several components:
-Power Core, once a Gate is lit, the same force that propels ships is used to a create a black hole in the core, which powers the Gate.
-Operation Deck, the area where every aspect of the Gate can be controlled, from field intensity to orientation.
-Habitation Modules, the living quarters of the Gate Operators.
    -Ship Docks
-Commercial Modules, areas of the Gate, which vary from system to system, that could be anything from hotels to shopping malls.

Gate Variants:
-Standard Gate, this gate variant comprises the majority of the Core Web, and is the most common type of gate.
-Long Range Gate, this variant makes up most of the Outer Ring of the Transit Web, they are wider and more powerful, in order to cover the larger distance between stars in the outer fringes of the galaxy.
-NSO Gate, a Near-Stellar-Object Gate, technically this is any type of gate that is commissioned near a star. Most of these gates are illegal.
-Battle Gate, a heavily-armed Gate that can move on its own power. Primarily used as a mobile Forward Operating Base, this gate's FTL capabilities can be weaponized to fire asteroids or small stars at far-away targets.
-The Transit Nucleus, the only gate of its kind, this is the largest man-made structure in existence. This behemoth is positioned high above the center of the galaxy and only used by special personnel. The Nucleus is powered by an artificial star and is stated to connect to only 6 other gates in the Transit Web. However, given its blind jump capabilities, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that this Gate can jump to almost anywhere in the galaxy.

Function:
The Transit Gate functions by creating a corridor of distorted spacetime, from the gate to the destination, with two effects. Firstly, the mass of the jumping ship is near-zeroed which allows impulse drives to propel it to near lightspeed. Secondly a gravitational gradient is induced, drawing the ship through space at variable magnitudes faster than the speed of light. In essence, an artificial black hole slides down the corridor, dragging the ship with it.  Most Transit Gates have two jump-modes, relay jumping and blind jumping. In a relay jump, the space corridor ends precisely within a couple kilometers of the destination gate. In a blind jump, the length of the corridor is determined by the jumper, and the falloff from distorted spacetime to normal spacetime is wider, allowing the jumper greater leeway in deciding where to end the jump.

Apparently this piece is being used for the cover of the Georgia Southern University art magazine, named Miscellany. Hence the reason for a name change. Figured a more minimal title would be fitting for a magazine.
