Searching Topic: Transit Web...

Synopsis:
The Transit Web is the sprawling network of Transit Gates that allow for quick travel throughout the galaxy. The entirety of the web is monitored and regulated by the Aglidica Innovations Corporation, the sole creators of the Transit Gate. The Web is comprised of 3 main components: The Outer Ring, the Core Web, and the Nucleus.

History:
Before the days of the Transit Gate, mankind's space travel capabilities were limited by the speed of light. With suspended animation being the only way to reach nearby exoplanets, and only a handful of those planets being habitable without terraforming, colonization was a slow and expensive process. However, with Earth's over-population reaching critical levels, striking out in space was humanity's only hope for prosperity. Within a little under two centuries, it had become cost-prohibitive to expand beyond a 12 light-year radius of Earth, and colonies outside the Solar System struggled to survive. Terrforming only yielded small sections of habitable land at a time, and colonies soon outgrew their capabilities. Lacking the fuel and resources necessary to make a return trip to Earth, extrasolar colonies were, for all intents and purposes, doomed to extinction unless a method of faster-than-light travel was developed. Realizing that the demand for this technology had become greater than ever, several corporations entered a race against time to be the first to create it. Eventually, a cold war between the Aglidica Innovations Corporation and Kadleo Spacetime Industries culminated in the former's breakthrough victory: the Transit Gate.

The original gate was fundamentally different than the "relay" system used today; the original Transit Gate, poised in orbit over Earth, was little more than a one-way slingshot, meant to fling a fleet of hopeful explorers and industrialists into the heart of the galaxy to plant a new seed for humanity. Knowing that returning home was an afterthought, volunteers of almost every profession joined what would be known as the First Galactic Exploration Fleet. After 2 years of recruiting, AIC was ready to publicly ignite the Transit Gate for the first time. On that day, all of mankind watched as the gate, with a blue brightness to rival the sun, flung the fleet blindly into the sea of stars.  For thirty years, that was the last anyone saw of them. Then, one day, without any command from its operators, the original Gate flared again. In a series of thundering booms, gleaming new ships appeared over Earth, filled with the sons and daughters of the original fleet. Not only had they built a second Gate with a remote connection to the original one, they had spread further in the galaxy by building 4 more gates, and took the first steps in what would be the Transit Web.

Structure:
The original network of Gates was organized by little more than AIC's exploration schedule. However, over the years, as more star systems were colonized, it was decided that a coherent and planned network would be established to promote interstellar commerce. Gates were decommissioned, built, or reoriented to ensure the most efficient connections between systems. To this end, the network was separated into 3 components: The Outer Ring, the Core Web, and the Nucleus.

Structure>Outer Ring:
Because the population of stars is more sparse in the outer portion of the galaxy, higher powered Transit Gates are needed to cover larger distances. When trying to link up these high-powered gate variants with the standard ones used in the Core Web, the difference in power often produces complications, most of which cause a traveler to overshoot a jump by light-years. To maximize efficiency and minimize expense, the Outer Ring connects to the Core Web in just four equidistant locations. This arrangement also frees up traffic between the two networks.

Structure>Core Web:
The Gates used in this part of the network are considered the standard variant, and account for the majority of Gates used in the Web. These pepper the inner portion of the galaxy, and Gate pairs are quickly manufactured for authorized expeditions to previously unexplored star systems. Although, on a ship's navigation interface, the Web seems to span most of the galaxy, the reality is that less than 5% of potentially habitable star systems have been explored and connected to the Transit Web.

Structure>Nucleus:
In a 5-kiloparsec region around the center of the galaxy, star formation is frequent, and the volatile forces involved prevent the creation of any safe Transit Web routes. The Web is organized to provide routes around this region, and general citizens have grown to accept this obstacle. However, the Transit Nucleus exists to provide a faster solution to a number of "elevated" parties. Positioned high above the center of the galaxy, the Nucleus is an enormous and super-powered variant of a Transit Gate, capable of transporting ships tens of thousands of lightyears in minutes. Naturally, a tremendous amount of energy is expended in making these jumps, so only certain entities are permitted to use it. Military, emergency responders, AIC executives, and few others use the Transit Nucleus to travel between the Outer Ring and Core Web much faster than anyone else. As far as the public knows, the Nucleus only connects to the Web in 6 hard locations: 4 in the Outer Ring and 2 in the Core Web. However, it is rumored that the Transit Nucleus can connect to any Gate in the network, offering an unsettling amount of power to whoever can utilize this capability.

Regulation:
The Aglidica Innovations Corporation owns a substantial paramilitary, that, despite the company's dubious history, operates with effectiveness and comfortable leniency. This military regulates the entirety of the Transit Web; they have the authorization to shut down any Gate within minutes, and have priority access to a Gate whenever there is a queue. In addition, many Gates are armed with targeted EMPs that can shut down any ship trying to escape the jurisdiction of the AIC paramilitary.
