The StarSpire and StarSiege slowly drift towards the Archives, and it stops emanating its ominous message. However, those in the ships can still feel its presence, as if it is waiting for some kind of input. The leading human upon the ship, Lord Addison, possesses a neural implant, and his cadre of guards and officers stare at him, anxiously expecting him to communicate with the colossal entity before them. In understanding, he opens the neural communication interface on the bridge of the StarSpire, and the words of the mysterious conversation begin to appear on the screen:
<Establishing Neural Uplink...> <Uplink established, retrieving contact identity...> <Contact identity unknown.> <Awaiting communication.> Lord Addison: "...What are you?" The Archives: "We are the vessel for all information in the universe." Lord Addison: "Are you sentient?" The Archives: "We are not sentient." Lord Addison: "I see... What are we doing here? Why were we brought to you?" The Archives: "Our herald, which you call 'Avalon,' detected a unusually large number of sentient beings in the 'Milky Way' galaxy at beginning of its decay. As a result, it collected the spacefaring structures containing the most of each sentient race and brought them to us for evaluation." Lord Addison: "Evaluation?" The Archives: "Please specify 'evaluation.' Lord Addison: "What?" The Archives: "Please specify 'what.' Lord Addison: "Oh... What did you mean by evaluation?" The Archives: "The presence of many sentient beings in a decaying galaxy does not correspond with recent universal trends. Those collected from each race are brought before us to be evaluated for potential asylum in nearby planets." Lord Addison: "Why is our galaxy decaying?" The Archives: "The center of each galaxy contains a supermassive black hole that lies dormant until an established amount of planetary mass within the galaxy is removed. As a result, the energy in the remaining stars is collected into the black hole and redistributed throughout the universe. This is a process intended to preserve the remaining energy in the universe near its 'Heat Death.' However, loss of planetary mass by other means have triggered its black hole despite the sufficiently powered universe. The black hole is causing the appearance of gravity rifts throughout the galaxy, allowing stars to be deconstructed and release their energy." Lord Addison: "So there is no hope for our galaxy?" The Archives: "The human interpretation of 'hope' is arbitrary and therefore not in our data banks." Lord Addison: "Arbitrary... How much time before our galaxy is gone?" The Archives: "By the human interpretation of time, the remainder of time until total decay of the 'Milky Way' galaxy is 1 month, 17 days, 3 hours, 45 minutes, and 18 seconds." Lord Addison: "Dear God... I can't take anymore of this." The Archives: "Your input is not required at this time, you will be recontacted after our evaluations are complete." <Terminating Neural Uplink...> <Unknown Contact offline.> Well, there you go. Soak it up, hopefully this part will be wrapped up soon. ___________________________________________________________________________ The series from first to latest: Within Our Grasp- [link] The StarSpire- [link] StarSiege: Colossus- [link] The Archives- [link] StarSiege: Oblivion Manifest- [link] Avalon- [link] Final Departure- [link] Wish Upon a Star- [link] Primordial Space- [link] Deus Ex Machina- [link] First Contact- [link] |
